Written mostly by Sugar Hill house musician Duke Bootee with Melle Mel, it swapped party rhymes for a bleak picture of ghetto life, and hip hop found its social conscience. Grandmaster Flash himself barely appears, but the slow, menacing synth groove made it one of the most important records of its era.
