IDLES
IDLES make loud, blunt, cathartic post-punk: Joe Talbot barking short, quotable lines over pounding drums, bass that hits like a hammer and two guitars that squall and screech. The Bristol band's debut, Brutalism, channelled grief and anger into something ferocious, and Joy as an Act of Resistance turned the same force on toxic masculinity, immigration and mental health with surprising tenderness.
Ultra Mono went to number one in the UK, then Crawler slowed down and opened up, exploring addiction and recovery with brooding synths and more space. Tangk, co-produced by Nigel Godrich, Kenny Beats and guitarist Mark Bowen, pushed further still, with love songs, electronic textures and a guest spot from LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy.
