ESP-Disk's first jazz release was cut in a single session in 1964 with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray. Ayler's huge, wailing tenor sax turns the folk-like melody of 'Ghosts' into something between a hymn and a howl, and free jazz was never the same.
