Ed Kuepper
Ed Kuepper's guitar drove The Saints, the Brisbane band whose '(I'm) Stranded' landed in 1976 as one of the first punk singles anywhere. He soon wanted more than three chords, with the band adding horns on Eternally Yours before he left to form Laughing Clowns, a restless group that set jagged guitar against free-jazz horns.
His solo records, beginning with Electrical Storm in 1985, found a warmer, more open sound: long, rolling songs built on strummed acoustic and electric guitars. Honey Steel's Gold is a fan favourite, brooding and lush, and he has kept recording steadily since, including a stint as a touring guitarist with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
