JOHNNY COLEY 'Mr. Sweet Whisper' Vinyl LP (2024 Avant-garde Jazz)

Year of release: 2024

Alabama poet Johnny Coley speaks his surreal stories in a slow Southern drawl, backed by his band Worst Spills, led by guitarist Joel Nelson, with Jasper Lee on vibraphone. Saxophone and angular guitar wind through 'Club Roma' and 'Flesh Vehicle', and the writing owes as much to French surrealism and John Ashbery as to jazz.
