Coil
Coil were one of the most mysterious offshoots of industrial music. John Balance and Peter Christopherson, bandmates in Psychic TV (Christopherson had co-founded Throbbing Gristle), built dark, ritualistic records from tape loops, found sounds, orchestral samples and electronics, steeped in magic, sex and death.
Scatology and Horse Rotorvator paired that menace with a strange beauty, and their slowed, mournful cover of 'Tainted Love' was released to raise money for AIDS charity. Love's Secret Domain absorbed acid house into the mix, while the two volumes of Musick to Play in the Dark drifted into hushed, nocturnal ambience.
Balance died in 2004, and Coil ended soon after with the posthumous The Ape of Naples.
