Death

1983–1995, 1997–2001USMetal

Death were Chuck Schuldiner's band, and few did more to shape death metal itself. Formed in Florida out of the earlier Mantas, they released Scream Bloody Gore in 1987, one of the first true death metal albums: buzzsaw riffs, pounding drums and Schuldiner's raw, rasping howl.

From there each record grew more ambitious. Leprosy and Spiritual Healing tightened the attack, Human, with Cynic's Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert, turned technical and progressive, and Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic paired intricate, melodic guitar work with thoughtful lyrics. The Sound of Perseverance was the last Death album before Schuldiner's death in 2001.
