Deep Purple
Deep Purple started out as a psychedelic, organ-led band that leaned heavily on covers, scoring an early US hit with Joe South's 'Hush', before Ian Gillan and Roger Glover joined and the band cranked everything up. In Rock set the template: Ritchie Blackmore's fast, classically tinged guitar duelling with Jon Lord's distorted Hammond organ, Ian Paice's swinging drums and Gillan's sky-high screams.
After Fireball, Machine Head arrived in 1972, built around the riff of 'Smoke on the Water', a song about the fire that destroyed the Montreux casino where they had planned to record. Made in Japan caught the same line-up stretching out on stage.
Line-ups changed often, with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes bringing a funkier edge to Burn, and the classic five reunited in 1984 for Perfect Strangers.
