Garbage
Garbage paired three Wisconsin studio obsessives with a Scottish singer they spotted on late-night MTV. Butch Vig, the producer behind Nevermind, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker built songs from loops, samples and layers of distorted guitar, and Shirley Manson gave them a voice that could purr, sneer and snarl in the same verse.
Their 1995 debut made that mix of grunge, trip-hop and pop sound effortless on 'Only Happy When It Rains', 'Queer' and 'Stupid Girl'. Version 2.0 sharpened it into glossy electronic rock, and in 1999 they were trusted with the Bond theme 'The World Is Not Enough'. Beautiful Garbage went further still, from girl-group pop to hip hop beats.
After a mid-2000s break they returned with Not Your Kind of People and have kept recording ever since.
