Hole
Hole's first album was a scream of feedback and fury. Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson formed the band in Los Angeles in 1989, and Pretty on the Inside, co-produced by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, was abrasive and confrontational, with Love howling over sludgy noise-rock guitars.
Live Through This found the hooks without losing the bite: 'Violet', 'Miss World' and 'Doll Parts' swing between sweet melody and raw-throated rage, with sharp lines about beauty, fame and violence. It came out in April 1994, days after the death of Love's husband, Kurt Cobain.
Celebrity Skin swapped grunge for glossy, sun-bleached Californian rock, with The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan co-writing several songs.
