Johnny Marr's chiming, intricately arpeggiated guitar and Morrissey's mournful croon, full of wit, longing and misery, made the Smiths one of the defining British indie bands of the 80s.
Signed to Rough Trade, they broke through with 'This Charming Man', and 'How Soon Is Now?' added a shuddering tremolo riff. Meat Is Murder topped the UK album chart, and The Queen Is Dead, with 'There Is a Light That Never Goes Out', is often ranked among the greatest albums of all time.
Marr's departure in 1987 ended the group just before Strangeways, Here We Come was released, and despite endless rumours they have never reunited.
