Soundgarden
'Black Hole Sun' sounded like the Beatles melting in the desert heat, and Superunknown, the album it came from, debuted at number one in the US.
Underneath lay stranger foundations than most of their Seattle peers: Kim Thayil's detuned, Sabbath-heavy riffs in odd time signatures, Matt Cameron's intricate drumming, Ben Shepherd's rumbling bass and Chris Cornell's huge, wailing voice. They were the first grunge band to sign to a major label, and Badmotorfinger brought 'Outshined' and 'Rusty Cage'.
They split in 1997 and reunited in 2010 for King Animal. After Cornell's death in 2017 they entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, and are now mixing a last record built around his vocals.
