Audioslave
Audioslave was the megalithic union of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell with members of Rage Against the Machine. The sound blended 1970s hard rock riffs with 1990s alternative intensity and by stripping away the hip-hop influences and political rap of Rage Against the Machine, the rhythm delivered a more melodic, groove-heavy foundation. This classic rock framework allowed Chris Cornell to showcase his four-octave vocal range, shifting effortlessly from soulful melodies to his signature raw, gravelly screams.
The band's sonic identity relied on Tom Morello's inventive guitar work. He avoided traditional synth-effects, instead manipulating his instrument's toggle switches and jack inputs to create otherworldly, electronic-sounding solos. Backed by Brad Wilk’s driving, linear drumming and Tim Commerford’s heavily distorted basslines, Audioslave created a massive, stripped-down stadium rock sound that felt both modern and deeply rooted in blues-rock tradition.
