Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple writes songs that refuse to sit still. Her deep, smoky voice can turn from a murmur to a snarl mid-line, and her piano playing is percussive and jazzy, drawing on jazz standards and show tunes as much as pop.
Tidal, released when she was 18, gave her the Grammy-winning 'Criminal'. When the Pawn..., made with Jon Brion, was more playful and adventurous, and The Idler Wheel... stripped things back to piano, percussion and her voice. Fetch the Bolt Cutters, recorded largely at home, banging on walls, furniture and whatever else was to hand, won two Grammys and topped many critics' lists for 2020.
