Kate Bush
Sharing a birthday with Emily Brontë, a teenage Kate Bush wrote 'Wuthering Heights' in the voice of Cathy's ghost and sang it in a swooping, otherworldly soprano that sent it to the top of the UK charts in 1978, the first time a female artist had done so with her own composition.
Encouraged early on by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, she took over producing her records, using the Fairlight synthesiser to build the dense, strange worlds of The Dreaming. Hounds of Love balanced the propulsive 'Running Up That Hill' against 'The Ninth Wave', a song cycle about a woman adrift at sea.
In 2022, Stranger Things carried 'Running Up That Hill' back to number one in Britain, almost 37 years after its release.
