INXS fused the sweat of the Australian pub circuit with the slinky grooves of funk and new wave, and in Michael Hutchence they had a frontman of rare, smouldering charisma. Andrew Farriss's taut keyboard riffs, Kirk Pengilly's saxophone and a rhythm section built for dancing gave them a sleek, irresistible edge.

Nile Rodgers produced 'Original Sin', from The Swing, and Listen Like Thieves broke them in America with 'What You Need'. Then came Kick: 'Need You Tonight', 'Devil Inside', 'New Sensation' and the sweeping ballad 'Never Tear Us Apart' made them one of the biggest bands on earth.

X kept the run going with 'Suicide Blonde' and 'Disappear', and in 1991 they packed out Wembley Stadium. Hutchence's death in 1997 left a gap no replacement singer could fill, and the group retired from touring in 2012.
