Muddy Waters
Muddy Waters plugged in the Delta blues and defined the sound of Chicago blues. Alan Lomax first recorded him on a Mississippi plantation for the Library of Congress, but after moving north he turned up the volume, with slashing electric slide guitar and a deep, commanding voice.
His Chess singles, including 'Hoochie Coochie Man', 'Mannish Boy' and 'Got My Mojo Working', with bands featuring Little Walter's harmonica and Otis Spann's piano, laid the groundwork for rock and roll, and the Rolling Stones named themselves after his song 'Rollin' Stone'. At Newport 1960 captured him live at his peak, and Hard Again, produced by Johnny Winter, brought a Grammy-winning late revival.
